2005-10-19 - 2006 World Cup - Seeding
Following the release of the October FIFA ranking today, here are the updated figures for the 2006 World Cup seeding*:
1. Brazil - 63.67 (0.00) (qualified)
2. Spain - 48.83 (0.00)
3. Mexico - 47.33 (-0.34) (qualified)
4. Germany - 46.83 (+0.33) (qualified)
5. Argentina - 46.33 (-0.34) (qualified)
6. England - 45.83 (+0.50) (qualified)
6. Italy - 45.83 (+0.33) (qualified)
8. France - 44.67 (+0.34) (qualified)
9. Netherlands - 43.00 (0.00) (qualified)
10. United States - 41.67 (0.00) (qualified)
11. others at or below 36.67, way too far behind
* these figures will of course only be relevant if FIFA uses the same method for seeding teams as for the 2002 World Cup.
The BBC's figures
are slightly different but as they don't show how the calculated them
I'm a little skeptical about them. Not that it makes the slightest bit
of difference as it's highly unlikely that the Netherlands or the
United States can move above France when the final rankings for
November are published on the 23rd. The only hope for both nations is
if Spain doesn't make the finals. In that case, the Netherlands would
move into 8th place unless the United States moves to within one place
of the Netherlands in the FIFA ranking, in which case both nations
would be tied on points and FIFA would need to decide which is more
important, previous World Cup performances (weighted to give more
emphasis on recent performances) or on the FIFA ranking. If it would
decide the former then the US would be seeded under this criteria,
otherwise it would be the Netherlands. All this of course, including
the rankings above, are all just a big, big 'IF'. FIFA is due to make
their decision only a couple of days before the draw. If only FIFA
could publish their methods before the tournament starts...

2005-10-19 - So mote it be |

I am thinking much about the seeding process and i expect the following
Pot 1:
Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, England,
Brazil & Argentina
Pot 2;
Trinidad/Tobago
Ghana, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Togo, Angola
Saudi-Arabia, Iran
Pot 3:
Mexico, USA, Costa Rica
Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay,
Japan, Korea Rep.
Pot 4:
the left 8 european teams
You ask why ? Look:
Pot 2 is the "weakest". This time filled with Africans because of their 4 debuting countries. Bad luck for Tunisia, as they will stick with them like glue therefore and also be seeded there. Trinidad&Tobago (or Bahrain) as well as the weaker other Asians will fill the pot up to eight. Propably, this pot will be drawn first.
Pot 3: The stronger sides of Asia combined with the teams from south america and the three experienced Concacaf-Teams will make this group. In fact, Mexico would deserve to be topseeded, but like tunisia, they are glued to their confederation compatriots and thus, they will be placed here.
Pot 4 with 8 europeans in the last Pot will guarantee the most suspense until the end. Apart from that. The can be drew without regarding any further regulations as they can go in each group.
I think, these pots are quite equal and so would guarantee equal groups

| Gibraldo, that would be most reasonable and logical. If the seeding ends up like that I'll definately buy you a beer or two if you're ever in the Cambridge area or when I'm back in Germany (if that's where you live...). However, I'm not sure if that would be fair to Mexico, as rather than being one of the top seeds, they would be drawn against one of the top seeds, and to me (even though I'm Dutch and my home country would benefit) I can't see it happening as that would seem very cruel on the Mexicans. Also, I think I would be correct in saying that it would be the first time ever that a country would be seeded as a top seed after not having played in the last World Cup. Saying that, if the Netherlands weren't seeded, it would definately be the first ever time that a country ranked second in the World wasn't seeded for the World Cup! I have all my fingers crossed! :-) |

Hi, yes I am from Germany, but a serb. (2 revanches still open ;))
Because of the Mexico, the explanation will be quite simple. They never reached a quater final in the last 3 World Cups.
I wonder, if Turkey will qualify, they might be also seeded instead of you (as you were not present at WC2002). Besides, there were one worldcup, when such things happend. England was seeded in 1982 although they were not present in Argentina 4 years before.
So, there might be changes within the pots, but the arrangement of the confederations will stay like this, I guess.
I don`t think, that FIFA will split up the pot of Europeans. This would mean Ukraine or perhaps Czechia in the weaker pot. They once did such things. In 1986 Denmark were put togehter with Irak, Morocco, Algeria, etc. So there was the Germany, Uruguay, Scotland, Denmark group of dead. They never did such experiments with european newcomers again...thankfully.
If they would split the non-topseeded europeans you can have a group with Brazil, Sweden, Czechia and Ivory Coast and another with Spain, Japan, Costa Rica and Angola. Also the drawing procedure with eleminating conference no-gos would be very difficult.

Should The Netherlands be seeded, do you think they might draw the Czech Republic, again?

If they're not seeding the Netherlands and only differentiate between seeds and non-seeds, you could end up with the following group - FIFA ranking in (#):
Brazil (#1)
Netherlands (#2)
Czech Republic (#3)
USA (#7)
How about that for a Group of Death??? |

2005-11-19 - Spain did qualify |

Spain qualified so if fifa sticks with the same method used in 2002, netherland would be in second pot, so the group were netherland will be a death group, except of course if it came with mexico.
