2005-10-09 - 2006 World Cup Qualifying - South American Playoff Situation

Following tonight's South American qualifying matches Uruguay, Colombia and Chile are all still in the race for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, but they can now only hope for a playoff place against Australia. Ecuador and Paraguay gained the final two automatic qualifying places having drawn at home to Uruguay, and having won away to Venezuela respectively. Uruguay have 22 points whereas both Colombia and Chile are on 21 points. On Wednesday Uruguay host Argentina, Colombia travel to Paraguay and Chile host Ecuador, hence each of the playoff hopefulls will be playing a team that's already guaranteed their place in the finals.

If teams all finish level on 22 points Uruguay will qualify due to their head-to-head against Chile and Colombia. If Uruguay and Chile finish level on points, Uruguay will again qualify. If Colombia and Uruguay finish level on points Colombia would qualify, and finally if Chile and Colombia would finish level on points Chile would qualify.
