2005-09-14 - 2006 World Cup - Seeding

Posted in Seeding

Following the release of the September FIFA ranking today, here are the updated figures for the 2006 World Cup seeding*:

  • 1. Brazil - 63.67 (0.00) (qualified)
  • 2. Spain - 48.83 (0.00)
  • 3. Mexico - 47.67 (0.00) (qualified)
  • 4. Argentina - 46.67 (-0.33) (qualified)
  • 5. Germany - 46.50 (-1.33) (qualified)
  • 6. Italy - 45.50 (0.00)
  • 7. England - 45.33 (-1.34)
  • 8. France - 44.33 (+0.16)
  • 9. Netherlands - 43.00 (+0.33)
  • 10. United States - 41.67 (-0.33) (qualified)
  • 11. Denmark - 39.00 (+1.50)
  • 12. Turkey - 36.33 (0.00)
  • 13. Sweden - 34.33 (+1.83)
  • 14. Ireland - 30.50 (-2.33)
  • 15. South Korea - 28.33 (-1.17) (qualified)
  • 16. Czech Republic - 28.33 (0.00)

* these figures will of course only be relevant if FIFA uses the same method for seeding teams as for the 2002 World Cup.

Just like last month, it looks like the top eight in this list will be seeded if FIFA keeps the same method. France strengthened their position slightly and it's now very unlikely that anyone can catch them. The Netherlands, currently second in the FIFA ranking, can't exactly go much higher to gain the points needed to top France. If the Netherlands can keep their 2nd place in the ranking, France would have to drop at least to 11th place before the Netherlands would go above them. The same goes for the United States who'd need to rise to 3rd in the ranking if France fall to 11th place. Denmark have gained significant ground against all those above them, but they may not even qualify for the finals. Perhaps the only hope for the Netherlands and the United States is if Spain or England fail to qualify for the finals. England still have control over their destiny but Spain will need to hope for the right things to happen for them to qualify. Who knows, perhaps they'll meet in the playoffs! Call me cynical but I somehow think that if there's the possibility of that happening come mid-October, UEFA may well change their minds about seeding teams for the playoffs...

It won't be the first time UEFA change the rules during a competition ... Liverpool playing in Champion's League this year for instance

2005-09-16 - UEFA Playoff Seeding

UEFA had better seed teams for their playoffs. I will not be happy if we have a big name missing from the World Cup Finals because of two big names drawing each other.

Thinking back to last years Champions League second round draw. Although UEFA did effectively seed the group winners, they should have gone a step further by placing the teams into 4 groups of 4 teams for the draw. i.e. by using the UEFA club ranking, they should have placed the four highest ranked group winners in Pot 1, the other group winners in Pot 2, the four highest ranked group runners-up in Pot 3, and the other runners-up in Pot 4. Then they should pair together Pots 1 and 4, and Pots 2 and 3 for the draw.

This would've avoided such clashes as Chelsea vs Barcelona, Milan vs Manchester United, Real Madrid vs Juventus, Bayern Munich vs Arsenal until later in the tournament, and also have avoided Liverpool vs Bayer Leverkusen, Lyon vs Werder Bremen, PSV vs Monaco at that stage. Yes, the matches were exciting, but to lose 4 excellent sides in the last 16, could've been avoided.

UEFA must seed both this tournament, and the World Cup playoffs to avoid a repeat of the CL debacle, and potentially good teams failing to qualify.
