Why giving an assignment to Grade 2005 for this summer vacation

Posted in Unspecified
Before the end of the second semester of year 2007-2008, an idea came to my mind that an assignment should be given to my students for the coming long vacation. A foreign language should be kept polishing, which is a line written for me by my roommate who is now teaching in Xiamen No. One Middle School. Indeed it is the case. If I have not spoken English, or not read English or practised some writing, I would have found that it was hard for me to speak fluently, hard for me to read English fast, hard for me to write in English logically and gramatically.WOW Gold
As some suggestions given by Gary Ho, a study brother of mine, who once gave an excellent presentation on how to deal with TEM 4 in my class in Fujian Teachers University when I was a sophomore, which impressed all of the students in my class, an English learner should keep reciting new words, keep reading, keep writing, keep speaking, keep learning grammar.
Besides the first term of senior year would be very busy for senior students, preparing the graduate paper including struggling in looking for all the necessary books, reference materials, journals and related articles, preparing personal resume and looking for a job, preparing for graduate materials, preparing to practise in a school, in a company, some preparing for postgraduate entrance exams, and many many other things.
And this summer vacation will be the last one. The time is very precious and very limited for all of the students. So far how much time has passed? Today is July 19,2008. More than one fourth(1/4) or one third (1/3)of this summer vacation was gone, never coming back. "Will you let the next one fourth(1/4) or one third (1/3)of the vacation slip away through your fingers???"
So an assignment is given to the students of Grade 2005, requiring them to do eight Model or authentic tests of TEM 8. "How many have you finished, dear students of Grade 2005?"
I gave the assignment with a hope to give students some clear directions to help them,to guide them to a higher achivement of success; as to myself,I just want to be a really good professional teacher.
  August 26,2008
Time flies like an arrow leaving several strong storms, devastating typhoons, thrilling and harmonious OG-Olympic Games, and the rollercoaster-like stock markets behind in this short important summer vacation.
Few days are left before the new term begins which results in another question--what plan do we have for the coming fresh year?

An enjoyable trip to Macau

Posted in Unspecified
Early in the morning on the fifth day in Hong Kong, 2004 I took a speed boat with the tour of about 30 travellers, crossing the peaceful, charming sea towards Macau. It took us about half an hour to arrive there. After arrival, getting on a bus, we went to Da San Ba--a burnt famous Cathedral. On the way there, we had to walk for some distance where we saw many local shops and I noticed many signs in the shops and many signs of streets names were in two languages--traditional Chinese characters and Portugese.
I was shown to aother scenic spot where there is a huge statue in the shape of Guanyin which has facial features of a laowai. wow gold
Then I went to a big big beautiful high ****** in golden colour, which only people of 18 or over 18 and people who are dressed reasonably--no wearing short trousers, are admitted to go in. I learnt from some movies that Macau is a city famous for gambling business. Inside the ******, so many people were gathered around tables after tables, trying their luck on each bet.
On the way to the hotel, I noticed some old old building with traditional Chinese characters which gave people a sense of ancient. I was amazed at how well those old building could be kept so well. The whole city is a combination of modern and ancient civilzations.
We also went to the residence of Portugese where each building is in Portugese style.
In the evening still with the tour guide and a tourmate, we went shopping in a big plaza. For some time I sat on a bench at the plaza, looking around at passers-by--still many foreigners, looking at the architecture, so different the mainland, around me, I tried to feel this totally new multicultural environment, tried to experience being there, wishing I had a chance of living there in the future.
When I received interpreting training in Beijing in 2006, I met Jojo-an interpreter who comes from Macau. She can speak four languages--Chinese, Cantonese, Portugese and English. She  does interpretation in Macau and Hong Kong.
After I came back and talked to Gary about my experience in Macau, he said,"George, you have been to a place that I have not been to." Since he had lived in China for about ten years, he had been to many many places and he has been to many many countries. He had been to the United States, most of the countries in Europe--England,Spain, Germany,France, etc., some countries in Africa, some countries in Asia--India, Nepal,Thai,etc..So I was a little bit happy to hear that I had been to a place that he had not been to.

A sleepless night

Posted in Unspecified
A sleepless night

I could not believe it. It happened so quickly, totally out of my expectation.
  The first time
I called her. She said goodbye to me. She found another man who had a good job, and was more handsome. (My heart was hit by a fist)Her parents would not accept my family if she told them. (My heart stopped beating)
  The second time
She called me and told me that she did not want to continue because we lived so far apart. It was impossible for us.(My mind went blank)
  The third time
A man answered my phone, and claimed that he was her husband.(My heart jumped into a well and sank down to the bottom)
  The fourth time
She just disappeared from the earth.
  The fifth time
I cut the relation with BS--J.
  The sixth time
A big generation gap between me and J made me fall deep down into the gap.How can I climb up and build a bridge to connect the gap?
  The seventh time
No more gap, no more bullshit, no more blowing the wind, no more rubbish, no more hesitation, no more procedures, no more traditional binding, no more snobbish perspectives. wow gold
Why difficulty after difficulty? Is a person's life composed of difficulties?
Should a person just be direct, straightforward, frank and nothing else? Why? Is a simple relation so difficult to find? The reality told us that in a so-called simple relation, there is something not so simple. It is difficult to build a relation and it needs great care and efforts to maitain it. In marketing, it takes ten times' efforts to find a new customer as to maitain an old customer. In psychology,it says that when a person satisfies the basic needs, like eating, sleeping, keeping warm and safe, then he needs something more spiritual like happiness, friendship, love,etc.. If all these needs are satisfied, he then needs to achive a higher goal, maybe to devote to the human mankind, devote to the society.
Here an important person pops into the mind-- Mr Jiang who supported me in my schooling fees from my sophomore year.Mr Jiang is General Manager of a stone export company which has business relations with many countries around the world. He founded the company by himself and recruited many Japanese and English majors and a couple of French majors for his global trade. I was the only student chosen to be supported from my grade. wow gold  I met him several times. Each time he left an impression on me that he is a very calm person, he seldom speaks, but only shows himself by doing or action. I felt very secure and respects him quite a lot. I call him each Spring Festival to say hello and thanks to him for all the help he gave me. He owns several factories and a hotel and some offices in Tokyo and Hong Kong and still he is never snobbish, but selfless to others and supports them.

The first heavy rain during my stay in Beijing

Posted in Unspecified
It is still raining and my roommate who comes from Kunming University to be a visiting scholar to BLCU is still watching TV. The TV in my dorm can receive many foreign channels including Arabian, Italian, NHK--Japanese,French,Korean,etc.  wow gold
My friend in Beijing Information Science Uni. told me that in BJ as soon as the rain comes in September the weather will cool down and send autumn to the city.
I had supper today in the first canteen of BLCU.I bought a dish of beef and bamboo which cost 5 yuan. Half a dish of vegetale here costs 0.9 yuan. I got two halves of different vegetables. And I got 2 liang (20 grams) of rice which cost 0.5 jiao. If I want to get more rice, I have to pay more. Extra rice means extra money here not like that in Zhangzhou.
Now I had to eat very slowly and carefully with my left side of teeth as one tooth on the right side seemed to have been broken and brought great pain to my nerve whenever I tried to bite even vegetalbe with the right side of teeth.
I walked along the little street covered with rain which was shining in dim lights after I went out of the west gate. The cold wind mixed with the cold rain made me shiver up a bit. I was looking for a printing place to make my new name cards... It was closed.I got the phone number and walked back into the street. Cold came over me and I began to sneeze a lot of times. Do I have to put on clothes with long sleeves now? wow gold

Taro Aso elected president of Japan's ruling LDP
(Xinhua)

2008-09-22 15:10:37.0Taro Aso elected president of Japan's ruling LDPaso1159070Asia-Pacific2@webnews/enpproperty-->TOKYO -- Taro Aso, current secretary general of the ruling Liberal democratic Party (LDP), was elected LDP's party chief in its presidential election Monday.
Aso, who served as the foreign minister in Junichiro Koizumi's cabinet as well as in the subsequent Shinzo Abe's cabinet, won 351, or 66.6 percent, of a total of 527 votes.

Former foreign minister Taro Aso bows to parliamentarians of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) after he was chosen as the party president during their meeting at the party headquarters in Tokyo September 22, 2008. Japan's main ruling party chose outspoken nationalist Aso, an advocate of more government spending to boost the economy, to be next prime minister and woo voters ahead of an election expected as early as next month. According to the LDP election rule, the candidate who secures the absolute majority of the votes wins the election.
"I will not fail the expectation of the Japanese people and is determined to make concerted efforts (with other LDP colleagues)," said Aso, after the results of the election were read out.
"We will fight resolutely with the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) in the next general parliamentary election," he said.
"Only after winning the election could I accomplish my sacred mission," Aso said.
At a special session of the Diet scheduled for Wednesday, Aso will automatically assume Japan's premiership, as the LDP commands dominance in the more powerful House of Representatives, which has the final say in picking Japan's new leader.

One World One Dream

One World One Dream

In 2001 we were so excited and proud of my country when the International Olympic Committee ex-chairman Samaranch claimed to the world:"Beijing,China".Beijing were going to be one of cities hosting the Olympic Games.Although Olympic Games origined from the Europe,it did belong to the whole world undoubtedly.
Loaded the nation's dream, waiting for 50 billion years,we Chinese Yan-Huang offsprings can carry out the historical dream--One World One Dream. We pray for peace, without war in the world. The world is our collective motherland.Peace is human being searching for permanently.Though human differ in skin, language and race,we can share the charm and happiness the Olympic Games brought to us together ,and persue the  peaceful dream together. We belong to a same world and have the same hope and dream.
When hundreds of peace doves fly in the sky, when the Olympic songs are singed....,people will memory that moment and still approval the topic of this era--peace.
Untill now there are several days for Beijing Olympic Games'beginning,we all are eager for that day's coming yet.

Stunning display, UK press says:
The British press spoke in praise of the spectacular Beijing Olympics opening ceremony unanimously, calling it the best ever and a stunning display of China's rising confidence.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), also ran live broadcasts of the opening ceremony on its BBC1 and BBC high definition channels.
Huw Edwards, who delivered the commentary with Sue Barker in Beijing, noted China's confidence.
A presenter with Eurosport hailed the Games as "bigger than anything imaginable", calling the ceremony an "extraordinary" and "extravagant" presentation.
The Financial Times said "the most certain victory of the Olympic Games was duly ratified on Friday night when China won the gold medal in the opening ceremony competition - presumably for all time.
The paper noted that no country in the world ever has - or will - match the Chinese in effort, human power, synchronicity, and ingenuity.
Calling it an enormous show and a gigantic event, the paper said the first triumph belonged to the evening's auteur Zhang Yimou, who insisted on traditional lines: nationalism with Chinese characteristics.
The Guardian displayed a photo captioned "Beijing Olympics take flight" showing the Bird's Nest being lit up by fireworks.
The Guardian said the ceremony that opened the 29th Olympic Games on Friday night outdid all of its predecessors in numbers, color, demonstrating to the world that the new China intends to make its presence felt.
The Daily Telegraph said: "China marches on to world stage." It published a photograph of hundreds of Chinese dancers wearing feather headdresses to represent the age of Confucius.
The paper said China had showed itself to the world leaders present in the stadium and to a television audience of billions.
The tabloid Daily Mail said Hollywood "will study the DVD of the performances for years to come and plunder Beijing's visual tricks".

Thai Food in London

Posted in Unspecified

Hello again everyone,

Jo here again. I have really enjoyed reading all your comments. Firstly, yes you all got the quiz right - yonks means a long time. You might hear someone say "I haven't been to the cinema for yonks", meaning they haven't been for a long time. It is an informal word so you need to be careful when you use it, but it is used in conversation between friends.

It's great to hear that one of you has been to Ely! Just in case people were confused - Ely is a very small city. It is called a city because it has a cathedral but usually cities have much much bigger populations than 15,000. London for example has a population of around 7.5 million! A city like Manchester has a population of about 500,000.

Thank you for introducing me to all the interesting places in China. It's fascinating for me because China is such a huge country. I have been to Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Tianjin and Qingdao - but there are millions of places I will never get to see so I am really interested to hear about them.

Someone mentioned they really like hearing about British life so I thought I would talk about other stuff  I've been doing this week, to give you an insight   into what things are like over here.

I went out and met a friend last night and we ate Thai food. Some of you might be surprised to learn that that isn't unusual at all here in the UK, and even less unusual in a big city like London.

A traditional British dish: fish and chips

You might have heard people talk about traditional British food like fish and chips, roast beef, sausages and mashed potatoes - but in reality we don't eat that kind of food very often. We eat a lot of dishes from different countries. The most popular dish in Britain in fact is Indian curry. This is so popular that it has become known as a British dish.

Indian curries are popular in the UK

Chinese food is extremely popular. Almost every town, city and even village in the UK will have a Chinese Take Away. The food you can buy there is not quite the same as you will find in China though. Chinese people own the restaurants and cook the food but a lot of it has been adapted  to suit  British tastes.

In recent years Thai food has become popular, along with Mexican and Middle Eastern dishes. And these aren't just dishes people eat when they eat out at a restaurant. A lot of people cook this kind of food at home. I often cook stir fries  , or Thai curries and Mexican dishes. It is quite rare that I would eat fish and chips.

So how about where you live? Do you eat food from other countries? What's your favourite food? Is the food you cook at home different from the food you would eat at a restaurant?

And what about today's quiz? Well we've been talking about cooking and meals...so if I was to say the expressions "to make a meal of something" - what does that mean? "I asked him to wash up but he's making such a meal of it."

Look forward to hearing your answers.

I'll be back in a couple of days. Bye for now.

Jo

French frown on fast food ,but Brits, Americans are loving it

Posted in Unspecified

Britons are the world's biggest fans of fast food, just ahead of Americans, while the famously gastronomic French are the least attracted to quick meals, according to a study published last week.

The survey of 13 countries also confirmed growing concern over obesity worldwide, but noted different priorities and strategies in different parts of the world for tackling it.

"People are inherently contradictory and nowhere is it more obvious than on such a sensitive and important issue as their weight," says Steve Garton of polling body Synovate, who produced the survey jointly with the BBC.

"The results show there's a world of people who cannot deny themselves that hamburger or extra piece of pizza, but probably make themselves feel better by washing it down with a diet cola."

In terms of fast food, 45 percent of Britons agreed with the statement "I like the taste of fast food too much to give it up" ahead of 44 percent for Americans and Canadians at 37 percent.

The French, long proud of their reputation for high-class cuisine, strongly disagree: 81 percent rejected the statement, followed by 75 percent of Singaporeans and 73 percent of people from Romania.

"Britons love their fish and chips," Garton says.

"French people take care of their image as a matter of course. Being thin is part of our culture and a point of pride," he says. "On top of this there is increasing awareness of the devastation obesity can cause to one's health."

Overall the obesity problem is fuelling increasing concern worldwide - although some are more concerned than others.

Fifteen percent of French people and 12 percent of Americans weigh themselves every single day.

In terms of how to shed weight there are also different strategies. Globally most people say cutting food intake is the best answer, followed by 43 percent who do more exercise.

But there are regional variations: 57 percent of Americans, 56 percent of French and 54 percent of Britons cut down on food to shed weight, while 14 percent of Malaysians opt for herbs and supplements to cut their weight.

For my love

Posted in Unspecified

You flaked, silent there before me

Your tears, they mean everything to me

The wind, howling at the window

Here's a lullaby to close your eyes, goodbye

The love you give me, but I lost

I really don't deserve it

But now, there's nothing I can give for you

So I sleep and weep, in my only memory

I'm so insignificant

Sleeping dormant deep inside of your world

Are you hiding away, lost?

Under the glebe

Maybe flying high

In the skyey

Perhaps I will be live without you

Many flowers have been sown on field

But who could growths up so blessedly

If I had died

I would have never

Felt sad at all

You will hear me say

I'm sorry  [
world of warcraft gold]

Where is the light?

Wonder if you're weeping somewhere

Where is the hope?

I want to see my only lover

If I can, I want to choose stop my life

But did you agree?

You said that you will live in my heart

Forever   [
wow gold]

I didn't believe eternal

But I only trust you

I can't live in the world without you

You are my only love

You are my only life

The long journeys

Posted in Unspecified

Animals will make extraordinary and often mysterious expeditions to find a good meal, sexy mates, and the perfect place to raise a family. This month, billions of cicadas will burst out from their 17-year-old hiding places to complete one of the longer journeys in time, while moving only a few inches from burrow to daylight. Other migrations cover thousands of miles.

  1、Cicadas
Billions of chubby, buzzing cicadas will surface from their underground bunkers this month to gather together, sing, and mate. The insects will have spent 17 years fattening up underground, growing through five stages of development. Their synchronized appearance overwhelms predators, leaving most of the reveling cicadas carefree to party for their five weeks of adult life.

  2、Lemmings
In the Arctic tundra, over-population and a scarcity of food sends lemmings on mass migrations at high speeds. Researchers clocked one trek of the petite mammals at almost 10 miles a day. For the weak, the pace of the journey is just too much and they are left behind to die.

  3、Wildebeests
Greener pastures drive 1.5 million of these herbivores in circles. Serengeti wildebeest travel more than a thousand miles in spectacularly huge herds, along with thousands of zebra and gazelle, to avoid the dry seasons in Tanzania and Kenya.

  4、Green turtle
Motherly instinct compels female green turtles to return to their birthplace to start their own families. The pregnant turtles swim more than a thousand miles from their coastal feeding grounds in Brazil into the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean to Ascension Island. On the tiny nursery's sandy beach, the expectant mothers carve out nests and lay their eggs before heading back home.

  5、Salmon
After spending years swimming in the ocean, salmon follow their noses and return to the freshwater streams they were born in to spawn and eventually die. They'll swim upstream against strong currents for hundreds of miles to make the perfect homecoming, even if it means arriving in shoddy condition.

  6、Ruby-throated hummingbird
Before its 500-mile trip to Central America, the ruby-throated hummingbird bulks up on nectar, insects, and tree sap. The tiny bird gains 2 grams of fat, almost doubling its weight, to make the nonstop flight from eastern North America across the Gulf of Mexico.

  7、Monarch butterfly
Migrating long distances is in a monarch's blood. Each fall, thousands of butterflies head west in California and Mexico. They summer 3,000 miles away, throughout the United States and Canada. But how they know when and where to go continues to puzzle scientists.

  8、Whooping cranes
Recovery efforts of the whooping crane have included flight lessons for the endangered snowbirds. Ultralight aircraft and radio-controlled robots disguised as cranes have lead hand-reared birds south to winter in protected areas.

  9、Freshwater Eels
Freshwater eels are born prepared for the rough waters they face in life. After hatching in the salty Sargasso Sea, the eels swim to freshwater rivers in the United Kingdom and the East Coast of North America. On the way, their kidneys adapt to the change in salinity. When it's time to lay eggs, the eels and their kidneys will return to their beginnings.

  10、Humpback Whales
Humpback whales hold the world's record for longest mammalian voyage. One population spends the warmer months eating a literal ton of food a day in waters off the Arctic Peninsula. Come wintertime, they swim 5,000 miles away to balmy breeding grounds near Columbia and the Equator.

The Goodness of Life (By: Ralph Marston)

Posted in Unspecified

Though there is much to be concerned about, there is far, far more for which to be thankful. Though life’s goodness can at times be overshadowed, it is never outweighed.

For every single act that is senselessly destructive, there are thousands more small, quiet acts of love, kindness and compassion. For every person who seeks to hurt, there are many, many more who devote their lives to helping and to healing.

There is goodness to life that cannot be denied.

In the most magnificent vistas and in the smallest details, look closely, for that goodness always comes shining through.

There is no limit to the goodness of life. It grows more abundant with each new encounter. The more you experience and appreciate the goodness of life, the more there is to be lived.

Even when the cold winds blow and the world seems to be covered in foggy shadows, the goodness of life lives on. Open your eyes, open your heart, and you will see that goodness is everywhere.

Though the goodness of life seems at times to suffer setbacks, it always endures. For in the darkest moment it becomes vividly clear that life is a priceless treasure. So the goodness of life is made even stronger by the very things that would oppose it.

Time and time again when you feared it was gone forever you found that the goodness of life was really only a moment away. Around the next corner, inside every moment, the goodness of life is there to surprise and delight you.

Take a moment to let the goodness of life touch your spirit and calm your thoughts. Then, share your good fortune with another. For the goodness of life grows more and more magnificent each time it is given away.

Though the problems constantly scream for attention, and the conflicts appear to rage ever stronger, the goodness of life grows stronger still, quietly, peacefully, with more purpose and meaning than ever before.

The Praying Hands

Posted in Unspecified

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The true story behind a well-known piece of art:

Back in the fifteenth century, in a tiny village near Nuremberg, lived a family with eighteen children. Eighteen! In order merely to keep food on the table for this mob, the father and head of the household, a goldsmith by profession, worked almost eighteen hours a day at his trade and any other paying chore he could find in the neighborhood. Despite their seemingly hopeless condition, two of Albrecht Durer the Elder's children had a dream. They both wanted to pursue their talent for art, but they knew full well that their father would never be financially able to send either of them to Nuremberg to study at the Academy.

After many long discussions at night in their crowded bed, the two boys finally worked out a pact. They would toss a coin. The loser would go down into the nearby mines and, with his earnings, support his brother while he attended the academy. Then, when that brother who won the toss completed his studies, in four years, he would support the other brother at the academy, either with sales of his artwork or, if necessary, also by laboring the mines.

They tossed a coin on a Sunday morning after church. Albrecht Durer won the toss and went off to Nuremberg. Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, for the next four years, financed his brother, whose work at the academy was almost an immediate sensation. Albrecht's etchings, his woodcuts, and his oils were far better than those of most of his professors, and by the time he graduated, he was beginning to earn considerable fees for his commissioned works.

When the young artist returned to his village, the Durer family held a festive dinner on their lawn to celebrate Albrecht's triumphant homecoming. After a long and memorable meal, punctuated with music and laughter, Albrecht rose from his honored position at the head of the table to drink a toast to his beloved brother for the years of sacrifice that had enabled Albrecht to fulfill his ambition. His closing words were, "And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is your turn. Now you can go to Nuremberg to pursue your dream, and I will take care of you."

All heads turned in eager expectation to the far end of the table where Albert sat, tears streaming down his pale face, shaking his lowered head from side to side while he sobbed and repeated, over and over, "No ...no ...no ...no."

Finally, Albert rose and wiped the tears from his cheeks. He glanced down the long table at the faces he loved, and then, holding his hands close to his right cheek, he said softly, "No, brother. I cannot go to Nuremberg. It is too late for me. Look... look what four years in the mines has done to my hands! The bones in every finger have been smashed at least once, and lately I have been suffering from arthritis so badly in my right hand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast, much less make delicate lines on parchment or canvas with a pen or a brush. No, brother ... for me it is too late."

More than 450 years have passed. By now, Albrecht Durer's hundreds of masterful portraits, pen and silver-point sketches, watercolors, charcoals, woodcuts, and copper engravings hang in every great museum, but the odds are great that you, like most people, are familiar with only one of Albrecht Durer's works. More than merely being familiar with it, you very well may have a reproduction hanging in your home or office.

One day, to pay homage to Albert for all that he had sacrificed, Albrecht Durer painstakingly drew his brother's abused hands with palms together and thin fingers stretched skyward. He called his powerful drawing simply "Hands," but the entire world almost immediately opened their hearts to his great masterpiece and renamed his tribute of love "The Praying Hands."

The next time you see a copy of that touching creation, take a second look. Let it be your reminder, if you still need one, that no one -no one ever makes it alone!
