Between each test cycle, which consisted of one charge/discharge pulse at each percent SOC level, the battery pack was discharged at its C1 rate to reach the next 10% SOC interval. Upon reaching the termination criterion, the percent SOC and its equivalent Ah rating were recorded. End-of-life HEV Battery Test Result. Because the initial traction battery pack capacity of each HEV was not determined when the HEV was new, the characterization results obtained from the end-of-life testing were compared to the nominal (manufacturer) rated battery capacity (Figure 3). Some points of note are: USB audio buffer size This is the key setting as far as performance is concerned; a smaller buffer size (slider to the left) results in tighter record control. Gradually lower the setting, while mixing (and/or scratching) until you get a “stuttery” display or you reach the lowest setting possible. This setting should be established well in advance of your gig, and if you don’t feel confident that the setting is appropriate, then increase the buffer size one or two ms to be safe. Auto fill overviews If you’re playing tracks which you’ve just added to your library, and don’t have overviews built, this option will build them for you with “spare” cpu cycles. This will reduce the performance of Scratch LIVE if your CPU is already maxed. Calibration You must calibrate whenever you set up, and regularly with a permanent install. The scope on your setup screen is an indispensable tool for checking your turntables and needles. Look at Scope reading and fixes in the back of the SSL manual for a selection of various scope signals and their likely causes. The threshold is the level below which Scratch LIVE ignores the input, this is to prevent noise from being interpreted as control signal. Until recently, scientists could only theorize as to why geese and other large, migratory birds adopted the V formation for flying long distances.
They discovered that the heart rates of the birds were lower when flying in a V than when flying solo. Migrating birds use the "squadron" formation because it allows them to glide more often, conserving energy. The aerodynamic V shape reduces the air resistance, allowing the geese to cover longer distances. In fact, a flock of geese can fly 70 percent farther by adopting the V shape rather than flying in isolation. The V formation may offer other benefits as well. Each bird has an unobstructed field of vision, allowing flock members to see each other and communicate while in flight. The goose at the head of the V is not necessarily the leader of the flock. But this positive image of China is new to the silver screen, and it clearly flatters a lot of Chinese moviegoers. It also pleased the censors, who allow only 20 foreign films a year to be shown here. “2012” is being shown uncut, unlike “Mission Impossible III,” for example, whose distributors had to delete scenes portraying Chinese bad guys. Still, suspicion of US intentions runs deep in some quarters here. Cynics are suggesting that director Roland Emmerich had the Chinese box office take in mind when he co-wrote the script. That doesn’t sound too plausible: China may have 1.3 billion people, and one day more of them may go to the movies, but box office revenue was still 15 times smaller in China than in America last year. Other critics make a more subtle point. The battery-swapping concept currently being implemented by Better Place has many feeling optimistic about the future of hybrid and all-electric vehicles. Not all, however, are sold on the much-heralded idea brought about by Better Place founder and CEO Shai Agassi. In a recent article on allcarselectric, the director of global electrification at Ford, Nancy Gioia, expressed reservations about what amounts to a futuristic ‘gas station’ in Better-Place’s revolutionary plan. “Battery swapping is an interesting concept, but there are potential pitfalls that must be overcome,” said Gioia. “A lot of EVs, because of the size of batteries and energy density, may have liquid cooling and that cooling loop has to break to change a battery. It’s a difficult thing to do,” she continued. According to Gioia, the evolution and progression of batteries and battery technology also raises concerns. “Battery packs are expected to change year to year as technology improves,” Gioia added. Ensuring that battery-swapping stations keep pace with the ever-evolving batteries being produced by manufacturers would pose significant challenges for the Better Place model. So will Better Place eventually become the answer to the overall electrification of the modern vehicle? No one really knows at this point. The day that Henry Kissinger picked it up, satire was said to have died. Mr Obama was sworn in as president on 20 January this year, a mere 11 days before the 1 February deadline which the Nobel Foundation sets for nominations. During that time the new man in the White House made positive noises on healthcare and Guantánamo, but any claim that the world had acquired a new prince of peace in these early days would have to have relied on Mr Obama's successful move to pacify the Democratic party, by bringing Hillary Clinton back into the fold. However deft that manoeuvre, it is hardly the sort of thing that is supposed to qualify a Nobel laureate. Even if the nomination was ludicrously premature, it remains conceivable that something that has happened during the best part of the year that has subsequently passed would justify the Nobel committee's decision. Certainly, Mr Obama has shown himself to have pacific yearnings, emphasising jaw-jaw over war-war in all his speeches, bravely promoting nuclear disarmament and taking decisions – as over European missile defence – which tend to cool diplomatic relations. But if the Obama effect is making itself felt in ambassadorial armchairs across the world, it is conspicuous by its absence in chief theatres of real conflict – or at least it is thus far. Take the Middle East, where Mr Obama's Cairo speech in June was stirring in explaining how Palestinians had "suffered in pursuit of a homeland", but the desperate conditions in Israeli-blockaded Gaza have not since improved one jot. Indeed the president has failed to secure even a temporary pause in Israeli building in the occupied West Bank. The American standoff with Iran remains fraught, and potentially explosive. And then of course there is Afghanistan, where Mr Obama remains commander-in-chief of an army at war in a foundering campaign. The Nobel committee might have judged him on his plan for peace – except he has not got one. He is currently trying to make his mind up about whether to step up or scale down the operation. The reality is that the award is less a recognition of Mr Obama's achievements than a mark of thanks from the world for his not being George W Bush. Encouragingly, the president acknowledged this oddity yesterday when he said would accept the prize in the spirit of "a call to action". From the squalid streets of Gaza city to the blood-soaked fields of southern Afghanistan, it is a call the world needs him to heed.
