The Kentucky legislature can move to keep kids from getting hooked on smoking now. Rep. David Watkins of Henderson has introduced House Bill 443, which would raise the cigarette tax by 70 cents, to $1 per pack. The idea of an increase is gaining strength, although others are talking about a more modest 30 cents per pack. An increase of 70 cents would make a substantial, positive difference. According to the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, with each 10 percent increase in winston cigarettes pricing, we see a drop of about 7 percent in youth smoking. Now, at a time when the state faces a serious budget shortfall, this would be important new revenue -- and by discouraging young people from starting to smoke, it would also lead to important long-term savings of health care dollars. | If Nicotine were scheduled and put into Schedule 1 where it belongs, this would have two drastic but ultimately beneficial effects. Smokers suffer an irreversible forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) loss of 4.4–10.4 ml per pack year smoked.2,3 There is a strong dose–response relation between the number of pack years smoked and the risk,4 severity,5 and mortality6 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the risk of lung cancer.7 Pack year smoking histories are important for quantification of tobacco exposure in research for direct study, to define patient groups or to determine confounding effects of smoking on outcomes from other exposures. | Last time I checked, we do still live in a democratic and capitalistic society where the tobacco industry has the same right as you and I to operate a legal business and make a profit from that business. Sadly, in the past several decades, there has been a methodical effort to shift America from its capitalistic roots to one of So******m. It is, I believe, this So******t movement that fuels much of the contention today with the tobacco industry. And, it is this so******tic move in America that I most vigorously resist. Clearly, most Americans don't realize what is at stake here and many don't care. Anyone that values individual rights, though, should absolutely condemn this massive expansion of government power and attack on the tobacco industry. It doesn't matter whether you smoke or not - the fundamental issue is whether you are free to live as you choose or are forced to live as the state commands.
